Calasparra

Calasparra is a town situated in the North West of Murcia. With stunning and varied countryside offering lush green fields, mountainous rocks and barren landscapes, all situated in what seems to be housed within a "bowl" with the Sierras forming the outer edge.

Property in Calasparra is becoming increasingly popular as there are beautiful & traditional country houses on offer, large rustic townhouses & plush new villas all being constructed in and around the area. Our suggestion is take some time to look around at various houses as there are many new properties being constructed on their own plots offering sometimes excellent value for money.

The town itself has approx 10,000 inhabitants and is well renowned in particular for its rice produce, but as a whole generates most of its income from agriculture.

The town centre is modern with a lovely plaza with fountain and impressive lights dotted around making it an extremely pretty place to sit and enjoy some tapas and drinks of an evening, the children play in the streets safely whilst the adults either watch them from outside their local bar, or take advantage of the communal benches situated under the trees dotted throughout the square.

Calasparra has everything you need for everyday life, with an excellent modern health centre, numerous dentists, vets, opticians, health care specialists, and all usual other amenities such as shops, bars & restaurants.

Some many outdoor activities are available in the areas such as mountain climbing, caving, fishing, water rafting, hunting and so much more.

There is a charming EX Pat community (albeit small) within the town and recently there has been a small shop dedicated to the supply of some of the "creature comforts" from the UK opened in the town.

Life in Calasparra is a traditional & tranquil one and ideal for those really looking to become involved in a community and live life to the full in a Spanish environment.

Well renowned for its rice produce Calasparra rice can be found all over Spain and is also shipped World-wide also within this area, due to the landscapes and plentiful water supplies. Many fruits & vegetables are grown locally and sold throughout the markets within the North West Murcia belt during the week. The market is held each Friday in Calasparra.

Running through Calasparra, the Rio Segura is a favourite with locals for fishing and swimming (as the water is so clear) and along the river white water rating can be enjoyed (both rapids & slow).

One of the most amazing sites is the "Sanctuary de la Virgin de la Esperanza", a church built into the side of a mountain by the river banks by hand as has been crafted beautifully for all to enjoy.

During weekends and holiday times most of the locals visit the Sanctuary not only for religious reasons, but to enjoy the facilities offered there such as children's play area, restaurant (housing in excess of 200 people), gift shop, beautiful gardens and walkways and of course the BBQ´s that are lined up on the river bank edges with washing and cleaning facilities so all can bring their food and enjoy being part of this community - preparing their food and swimming, talking and enjoying the wonderful surroundings. A licensed bar is nearby as well as other facilities to make this an enjoyable place to be all day.

If you are more adventurous, there is so much to do here. White water rafting, horse-riding, paint balling, mountain climbing, cycling, fishing, shooting & caves which can be found with stalactites & stalagmites in beautiful underground caverns with cave drawings. A go-karting track is also nearby, so there is a plethora of activities waiting to be enjoyed

Education in Calasparra seems to be good - with the local schools offering English as part of the curriculum and a choice of 3 or 4 schools for the children to enjoy. If an international school is what you are looking for, Murcia city some 30 minutes or so away has one of the finest in Southern Spain.

Within the town most things can be found easily. A 24 hour medical centre, a host of shops offering English newspapers and obviously a wide range of traditional Spanish fruit, vegetables & meats and of course the usual facilities such as a vet, dentist, optician, everything required for day to day living.  If you really wish to live in Spain and not a tourist resort, Calasparra is definitely the place to be.
